Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would turn into a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

As the debut season of the acclaimed sci-fi show coming to an end—and Season 2 already in development—the writers' room reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.

Regarding the Incredible Fan Response

It would be easy to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.

“The experience is akin to an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We don't try to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by audience chatter.”

“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.

The Central Mystery: Has Vince Gilligan See the Ending of Pluribus?

Given that Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by public opinion, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… in a way.

“We've developed some potential directions about where the show might end up,” he states. “yet we stand ready to discard a good idea for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Then again, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.

“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”

Then again, one could always use the iconic TV endings?

“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
