An esteemed Russian army officer has been fatally wounded following an detonation in Moscow, according to reports from authorities.
The incident took place on Monday morning when an IED placed beneath a vehicle exploded, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov served as the head of the armed forces' operational training department.
Investigators indicated that one possible explanation involves the alleged involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has remained silent.
Scene of the Incident
Personnel have been sent to the site, which is understood to be in a southern district of the capital.
Accounts state the explosion happened in a car park near a residential building.
Pattern of Assaults
Since the onset of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military personnel have been targeted within Moscow.
This latest event follows other serious incidents, such as:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was died in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a bomb hidden on a scooter was triggered from afar.
While a Ukrainian source previously linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such allegations are not officially confirmed as a matter of policy.
The conflict has witnessed shadowy operations reaching into the center of the Russian capital.
The investigation into General Sarvarov's death is still ongoing.
