Educator Slain and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Armed assailants have killed a teacher and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an assault against a educational institution for young women in north-western Nigeria, according to police.
The criminal group stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the start of the week, authorities reported.
The armed individuals "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before breaching the school's outer barrier and seizing the students from their dormitory, according to a statement.
One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now being treated medically.
Eyewitnesses described a considerable contingent of armed individuals, referred to locally as criminal elements, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to cause panic.
Community members told reporters that the armed men then led a number of girls into nearby bushland.
The authorities announced they had sent "supplementary tactical squads, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and believed flight corridors.
In the last several years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have regularly come under attack for militant organizations, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.
The assault in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge afflicting the area, leaving families in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they expect and desire their daughters' safe return.
